The University of California, Davis, is the first to endorse the new nonprofit, Academics Without Borders USA.
In a January 2015 letter, UC Davis Provost Ralph Hexter introduced the new effort to deans and their faculties and said the organization "provides another outlet for important public service by the university community."
Academic communities to help developing countries
The mission of AWB/USA is to mobilize the world's academic communities to assist developing countries in creating higher education and scientific research capacity.
Hexter wrote: "I hope that you will encourage faculty in your schools, colleges, and divisions to look into the opportunities afforded by this organization to volunteer their expertise, as they deem their work appropriate to furthering mutual objectives."
Provost Hexter's letter
Dear Deans,
I am pleased to introduce you to Academic Without Borders, a new non-profit organization founded in the Davis community, comprised of current and recently retired UC Davis faculty, administrators and alumni. This fully voluntary, global public service organization is dedicated to the mission of building capacity in institutions of higher education in emerging nations, an effort that is key to strengthening the ability of these nations to develop and improve their civil societies and economies.
I am proud that the UC Davis community is taking the lead in establishing this national organization and encourage you to become familiar with their work at http://awbusa.org. Especially as UC Davis attends to its international profile, you will find that AWB-USA provides another outlet for important public service by the university community. I hope that you will encourage faculty in your schools, colleges, and divisions to look into the opportunities afforded by this organization to volunteer their expertise, as they deem their work appropriate to furthering mutual objectives.
While I am delighted that Academics without Borders-USA has been established in our own region, as its name implies, expansion of the organization will include expertise from other parts of the country. Therefore, I encourage you to think about your colleagues at other institutions and offer referrals to AWB-USA as appropriate.
I look forward to UC Davis's future collaborations with Academics without Borders-USA.
All the best,
Ralph Hexter
